While dental emergencies are rare, they can happen, and it's important to know how to take care of your teeth. Here are the most common types of emergencies seen by Dr. Olson, and what you should do if they happen.

Broken, chipped, or fractured tooth: If it doesn't hurt and there isn't a significant cosmetic issue, call our Eau Claire, WI dental office for an appointment during regular hours. If it's a significant cosmetic issue (such as a broken upper front tooth) or there is pain (enough to interfere with sleep), call the office. If it is not within business hours, there is a phone number on our answering machine to reach an on-call staff member who will help determine whether Dr. Olson should be called in to see you.

Knocked-out tooth: Call our Eau Claire, WI dental office right away. If the tooth has been knocked out of your mouth, it's best to rinse (don't wipe or scrub) any visible dirt, dust, etc. Place the tooth back in the socket ASAP. If that isn't possible, place the tooth in the mouth between the lower teeth and your cheek, or in milk, until Dr. Olson can see you.

Toothache: Call our office right away. This could help you avoid an expensive root canal or worse. Don't do anything to provoke the tooth or make it worse. If the pain gets worse with cold/heat, chewing, or biting, avoid it. Over-the-counter pain medication can be effective in the meantime, but don't ever exceed the amount of Tylenol recommended on the bottle.

Broken jaw: Go immediately to a hospital emergency room where an oral surgeon can re-set and splint the jaw.
